This position will provide services including developing Knowledge Management and Knowledge Engineering (KM/KE) governance, identifing and developing written business processes designed to improve efficiencies which support organizational transformation, conducting and supporting KM/KE assessments/studies/projects, conducting KM training and KM Working Group meetings, supporting daily KM operations, exercises, and contingencies, providing information dissemination, situational awareness and networking, providing support for the information portal and knowledge repositories, preparing technical writing and business processes products, preparing yearly plans for execution of deliverables, and providing input and feedback for problem resolutions. 


The Knowledge Management Specialist shall:

  • Assist in the administration of Knowledge Management (KM) within the Office of the Command Knowledge Manager (CKM), Command Historian, Records Manager, and US SOUTHCOM’s Command Group.
  • Assist in managing and responding to formal and informal tasks to the KM office
  • Assist in expanding and embedding knowledge management (KM) and Knowledge Engineering principles, communities of practice, business processes, and promoting of KM education within the Headquarters and AOR championing organization-wide information sharing and collaboration
  • Ensuring meeting minutes, repository development, and all other assignments, deliverables, and products are coordinated or approved  in order to support and promote new business strategies and meet long term command KM/KE objectives for the AOR.
  • Organize and manage the SOUTHCOM Enterprise Knowledge Management Working Group (EKMWG) and maintain the EKMWG collaboration site.
  • Assist in preparing Knowledge Management Plans and Annexes in support of SOUTHCOM trainings, exercises, contingencies, and operations.
  • Support KM/KE initiatives to promote and encourage the creation, preservation, and sharing of knowledge across the SOUTHCOM enterprise.
  • Help build and maintain knowledge repositories, business processes, and knowledge engineering/re-engineering initiatives.
  • Provide professional assistance and advice to SOUTHCOM component commands and direct reporting units.




  •  Master’s level degree is preferred, each KM/KE Specialist requires a minimum of a Bachelor degree in Knowledge Management (KM), Business Process Engineering, Organization Structure, Business Administration/Management, or other directly related degree as identified by the COR
  • Five (5) years of specific KM/KE related experience in KM, KE, business process improvement, Lean 6 Sigma, Transformation, or other process improvement related experience is required.
  • Successful completion of a KM, KE, or Lean 6 Sigma certification from a professionally recognized entity such as a KM or KE Professional Society, the KM Institute, or an equivalent institution is required. This certification must be updated/renewed within 5 years from the previous certification.
  • SOUTHCOM requires a Knowledge Management/Knowledge Engineer Specialist with relevant professional experience in a military setting. Relevant professional experience can be classified as someone who has served in the military or someone who has worked in direct connection to/with the military for at least five (5) years.
